Reading Corner

The BC Library Association’s Summer Reading Clubs are a great way to help children and teens develop healthy reading habits and maintain their literacy skills.

For 2009, the kids’ summer reading club theme – Follow the Reader – includes ties to the Olympics with subthemes that include global citizenship, problem solving, leadership and striving to be one’s best. Children up to age 12 are encouraged to register through their local public library.

Teen Reading Club is a year-round online program for book-lovers aged 13 to 18. This year’s newspaper-inspired theme is Read All About It! Teens can register online anytime at www.teenrc.ca. Happy Summer Reading!

Minister Margaret MacDiarmid

I am both honoured and excited to be British Columbia’s newly appointed Minister of Education and Minister Responsible for Early Learning and Literacy.  

I understand the importance of education and the impact that a strong foundation in learning has on the lives of British Columbians. I have experienced this first-hand through my general practice as a doctor, where I worked hard to educate my patients about the importance of leading healthy lives, including eating right and being physically active.

As I take on my new responsibilities as Minister of Education, I look forward to continuing my work to create healthier, better educated British Columbians, and to meeting with students, teachers, parents and stakeholder groups throughout the province.

Education remains a top priority of this government, and although the economic climate will offer challenges on the road ahead, I know that if everyone who has a vested interest in the success of our students and of our education system works towards our common goal – putting students first and ensuring their success at school – then our relationships will be positive, and we will accomplish great things.

Enjoy your summer and I look forward to working with you to make B.C. the best-educated, most literate jurisdiction in North America.

One of the most exciting features of /EDU is the “Project Showcase” where teachers share student projects and activities related to the Games or in the areas of sport, culture and sustainability. B.C. students are excited about the upcoming Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. They have been following the news, witnessing the preparations, watching the advertisements, seeing the elation and feeling the anticipation of a worldwide phenomenon and one of the most significant events in the history of British Columbia. In essence, they are already engrossed in the excitement surrounding the Games.

The upcoming school year is an incredible opportunity to further engage our students in meaningful learning experiences. That is why we are creating school- and classroom-based programs and activities that will help every B.C. student to remember their Olympic school year.

The fact that the Games are being held right here in our own province has given British Columbians access to educational programs and resources that have never before been available to us and may never be available again. There are currently so many unique opportunities to harness the interest and enthusiasm our students feel as the Olympic and Paralympic Games approach; there are so many teachable moments that present themselves that can greatly contribute to classroom learning.

Olympic and Paralympic themes span across all courses in the B.C. school curriculum – from science to language arts, mathematics to physical education, social studies to fine arts, technology to career planning. Teachers of all grade levels can take advantage of these natural educational links.
