CANADA'S FIRST COMMUNITY COURT OPENS IN VANCOUVER
On Sept. 10, Canada’s very first community court opened its doors in Vancouver’s downtown eastside neighbourhood. A ceremonial opening for the court was held on Sept. 6, which was attended by members of the judiciary, Solicitor General John Van Dongen and Premier Gordon Campbell. Read more

NEW JUSTICE CENTRE IMPROVES COMMUNITY ACCESS
A newly expanded Nanaimo Justice Access Centre that gives people with legal disputes quick and affordable access to information and services was officially opened Nov. 6 by Attorney General Wally Oppal.

EMPLOYEES HONOURED WITH PREMIER’S AWARDS
Court Services Online employees from the Ministry of Attorney General have received the Gold Premier's Award for Excellence and Innovation as part of a 2008 regional competition.
"It's gratifying to annually recognize BC Public Service employees who consistently raise the bar in their work, providing exceptional services and programs to residents across the province," Premier Gordon Campbell said in presenting the first regional awards. Read more

CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS AND SHERIFFS’ SERVICE RECEIVE WAGE ADJUSTMENT
As part of government’s continued focus on making communities safer for British Columbians and renewing the justice system, the Province has approved a temporary market adjustment raising the wages of provincial correctional officers and sheriffs to ensure the BC Public Service is better able to recruit and retain skilled employees to support court services and public safety. For one day each year, Ministry of Attorney General lawyers ply their craft not in a court of law, but on a court of hardwood. Trading their suits and robes for T-shirts, shorts and basketball shoes, they partake in the annual Hoop-Law charity fundraiser. Read more
