New Chief Commissioner of B.C. Treaty Commission

The appointment of Sophie Pierre of the Ktunaxa Nation as the new chief commissioner of the British Columbia Treaty Commission was ratified by the Province in late February and the First Nations Summit in March. Her appointment will begin once all three Principals of the treaty process have completed their ratification processes. She was chosen by B.C., Canada and the First Nations Summit to guide the commission forward in the important task of advancing negotiations and facilitating fair and durable treaties.

Chief Sophie Pierre has over 20 years as an elected chief. Her business acumen and commitment to her people, evidenced through youth activities, women’s advocacy and elders’ support, have made her one of the most recognized Aboriginal leaders in the country.

The BC Treaty Commission is an independent and neutral body, founded in 1992 to facilitate the negotiations of treaties with First Nations in British Columbia.
